PS3 could release in 2007 |
Friday, 29 July 2005 |
According to analysts at Wedbush Morgan, if the Xbox 360 fails to garner sufficient support, the Playstation 3 may release in early 2007. "We expect Sony to defer a decision regarding PS3 launch until it is able to assess the likely success of the Xbox 360, and anticipate that Sony will make its decision shortly after the Xbox 360 launch. We do not expect the PS3 until mid 2006, at the earliest, and should Microsoft fail to garner sufficient software support to gain an insurmountable lead, we think that there is a possibility that the PS3 launch will slip into early 2007." However, last week Sony set expectations that the Playstation 3 will at least release in Spring 2006 in Japan. The true reliability of this statement is undetermined. |

Playstation 3 expected to live 10 years |
Wednesday, 27 July 2005 |
Recently Sony's Ken Kutaragi indicated that the reason the Playstation 3 will support technologies such as Blu-Ray and HDTV straight out of the box is because the console is expected to live for about 10 years. "We're looking at a life cycle of 10 years with the PlayStation 3. We're currently shifting from standard TVs to HD TVs," said Kutaragi. "But in the next couple of years, most flat-panel TVs will be full HD. We're releasing the PS3 with full HD features from the start so that consumers won't have to buy another version of the console in the future. For the same reason, we're using Blu-ray as the PS3's disc format." |

Resident Evil 5 Confirmed for Playstation 3 |
Thursday, 21 July 2005 |
Capcom has recently confirmed a report from the latest issue of Famitsu that Resident Evil 5 is currently in production for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. They left no mention of the Nintendo Revolution. It is possible that Capcom is avoiding mentioning the Revolution until more details about the system are revealed.
Resident Evil 5 will carry the plot from the highly acclaimed and vastly successful Resident Evil 4, which is currently a GameCube exclusive. On a related note, Resident Evil 4 is in development for the Playstation 2 as well, but reports say that they are having trouble acheiving an acceptable level of graphics quality. |

Kutaragi comments on Playstation 3 (again) |
Tuesday, 19 July 2005 |
Ken Kutaragi, the head of Sony's Playstation department, recently spoke in an interview with Electronic Engineering Times Asia. He made the following comments regarding the Playstation 3 console:
“Though sold as a game console, what will in fact enter the home is a Cell-based computer. The model image for the Cell-based network may be the Internet: servers around the world form one virtual 'computer,' and each PC accesses it. Application programs can no longer directly access the hardware; instead they will have to be written in high-level, object-oriented language. The Cell processor will completely change the concept of programming. I am sure that a technology revolution is about to occur, not only within Sony but throughout the digital consumer electronics industry.” |

PS3 & Xbox 360 capture EA's attention |
Thursday, 14 July 2005 |
In an interview with a Japanese gaming magazine, EA Vice-President David Gardner has suggested that the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 will be attracting the bulk of EA’s attention out of the three next-gen consoles. This could mean that EA will be sidelining the Nintendo Revolution in favor of the Sony and Microsoft systems. Since no specifics have been announced it’s possible that EA could continue the trend of porting popular games to the Revolution, as it’s been doing with the Gamecube. Without more information and the actual quote there’s little point in jumping to any conclusions about EA’s plans. |

Playstation 3 loses router function |
Thursday, 14 July 2005 |
According to Sony Entertainment's Ken Kutaragi, the wireless functionality that was originally planned for the Playstation 3 has been dropped in order to bring down the overall price of the console. Originally, the functionality would have allowed the PS3 to use it's 3 Gibabit enternet ports as a home router. It is unclear whether or not this means they will also drop two of the Gibabit ports. |
